Recording Academy’s newly launched
Black Music Collective hosted its inaugural
Grammy Week event to celebrate the countless contributions of Black creators and professionals to the music industry.
Held on 3/10, the virtual program was hosted by
Jeriel Johnson and was packed with performances from Grammy-winning artists like
Yolanda Adams and
PJ Morton, who
performed a rendition of
Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”;
H.E.R. and first-time-Grammy-nominated rapper and producer duo
Freddie Gibbs &
Alchemist.
The event also featured intimate reflections from industry moguls like Recording Academy Chair and Interim President/CEO
Harvey Mason Jr.,
UMG EVP, Business & Legal Affairs for North America
Jeff Harleston, former Chairman/CEO of
BET Networks
Debra Lee,
Quincy Jones,
Jimmy Jam and more.
"As the first of its kind, we created this event with every intention to amplify Black voices and each of our experiences within the industry," said Mason. "The BMC will continue to foster a space for members and industry professionals to educate and elevate Black creators during Grammy Week and beyond."
Additionally,
John Legend,
Janelle Monáe and
Issa Rae, among others, discussed the Black experience in the context of social justice via fireside chats.
