Vice President
Kamala Harris recently reminded voters how
Donald Trump treated Puerto Rico in the aftermath of 2017's Hurricane Maria. Her sentiments proved even more impactful amid Trump's MAGA rally at
Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sunday (10/27) in which "comedian"
Tony Hinchcliffe called Puerto Rico "a floating island of garbage."
A litany of racist comments continued throughout the event, prompting Latino superstars
Bad Bunny and
Ricky Martin to speak up on social media. Taking to
Instagram, Bunny shared a clip of Harris reflecting on Trump's failure to act after back-to-back hurricanes slammed Puerto Rico, causing island-wide devastation. Instead, she said, Trump offered nothing but "paper towels and insults."
Jennifer Lopez and
Luis Fonsi soon joined the fray as well.
Martin, meanwhile, posted a snippet of Hinchcliffe's appearance and wrote "this is what they think of us" in Spanish at the bottom of the post. He officially endorsed Harris with a graphic that read, "Kamala Harris will build an opportunity economy for Puerto Rico."
Latinos are a key constituency for any winning campaign in 2024. Battleground Pennsylvania, where polling margins show an extremely close race between the two presidential candidates, is home to the third-largest Puerto Rican diaspora in the country. Per
Latino Data Hub, more than half of the state's roughly 579k eligible Latino voters in the state are of Puerto Rican descent.
With Bad Bunny's 45.6m IG followers and Martin's 18.6m, Hinchcliffe (and Trump) are "en problemas." Check out their posts below while we suit up for battle.
