Well, this is a surprise. The U.K. Official Christmas #1 single has been claimed by
YouTube personality
LadBaby with his charity version of
Starship's “We Built This City” shifting 75k combined sales, a huge 93% of which were downloads.
Over on albums,
The Greatest Showman (
Atlantic) records its best sales week yet.
Proceeds from the sales of “We Built This City”—which references British "delicacy" sausage rolls instead of rock & roll—will go to food bank charity
The Trussell Trust. The remaining 7% of sales were made up of audio and video streams. It’s the first novelty song to claim the festive spot since
Bob the Builder did so with “Can We Fix It?” in 2000.
That means
Ava Max stays at #2 with “Sweet But Psycho” (Atlantic) and
Ariana Grande moves down to #3 with “thank u, next” (
Island).
Mariah Carey leads the pack of festive classics with “All I Want for Christmas is You” (
Columbia) at #4 followed by “Last Christmas” (
Epic) by
Wham! at #7,
The Pogues’ “Fairytale of New York” (
Warner) at #11 and
Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” at #13.
Elsewhere,
Halsey moves down to #5 with “Without Me” (
Virgin EMI); Grande’s “Imagine” is new at #8.
On the Official Albums Chart,
The Greatest Showman spends a 23rd week at #1. The soundtrack shifted 69k combined sales—bringing its total to over 1.5m—85% of which were made up of CD, vinyl and download over the last seven days.
Bruce Springsteen claims this week’s highest new entry at #6 with
Springsteen On Broadway (Columbia), while
Fleetwood Mac’s
50 Years–Don’t Stop (
Warner Bros.) hits a new peak, up four places to #8,
Olly Murs’
You Know I Know (
RCA) climbs up one to #10, and the
A Star Is Born (Polydor) soundtrack lifts five places to #11 following a deluxe edition re-release.
The rest of the Top 5 is like so:
Michael Buble with
Love (
Reprise) at #2,
George Ezra with
Staying at Tamara’s (Columbia) at #3,
Roy Orbison and the RPO at #4 with
Unchained Melodies (
Sony Music CG) and
Take That and
Odyssey (Polydor) at #5.
