Hipgnosis Songs Fund Limited and
The Family (Music) Limited have acquired a music catalog from artist/producer duo
The Chainsmokers, aka
Alexander "Alex" Pall and
Andrew "Drew" Taggart.
The trove of compositions includes 32 Chainsmokers songs—led by such works as #1 smashes "Closer" (f/
Halsey), "Don't Let Me Down" (f/
Daya), not to mention 10 songs written or co-written by Taggart, including the
Logic monster "1-800-273-8255" f/
Alessia Cara and
Khalid.
The
Grammy-winning
Disruptor/Columbia pair is the 14th most-streamed act globally on
Spotify and has racked up a big ol' pile of platinum and gold certifications. They were represented in the deal by manager
Adam Alpert and attorney
Jaimie Roberts.
This pact follows on the heels of Hipgnosis catalog coups including
Benny Blanco,
Dave Stewart,
Jamie Scott and
Starrah. The company has raised a mountain of investment capital based on its "songs as assets" structure. More on all that at the "related stories" links below.
"The Chainsmokers have created amongst the very biggest hits in the world for the dance and pop community over the last seven years," proclaimed Hipgnosis/The Family (Music) Limited boss
Merck Mercuriadis. "It’s my pleasure to welcome Alex, Drew and Adam to the Hipgnosis Family. But I'd like to know who took my lighter."
In a related story, we tried chainsmoking once back in college, but ended up curled in a fetal position under a table, weeping softly into a crocheted pillow. So perhaps it's best left to professionals.
