ASCAP Experience continues its celebration of
Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI)
Heritage Month with the virtual presentation "Metamorphosis: David Henry Hwang & Huang Ruo in Conversation."
Featuring three-time
Pulitzer Prize finalist playwright Hwang and composer Ruo discussing themes of the Asian American experience in theater, opera and concert music, the program will be held on 5/19 at 3pm ET via ASCAP’s
YouTube channel.
Nancy Yao Maasbach, President of the
Museum of Chinese in America, will moderate the conversation, which precedes the 7/30 world premiere of Hwang and Ruo’s opera,
M. Butterfly, at the
Santa Fe Opera. Hwang is the author of the play the opera is based on, also called
M. Butterfly. It won the
1988 Tony Award for Best Play.
Earlier this month, ASCAP launched its AAPI Heritage Month appreciation campaign with "
Seoul Music: Amber Liu & Justin Park in Conversation" and curated a
playlist centered on music from ASCAP members in the AAPI community, including
Mitski,
Olivia Rodrigo,
Bella Poarch,
TOKiMONSTA,
Steve Aoki and
Hayley Kiyoko. ASCAP is also sharing exclusive videos from AAPI music creators on social media all month.
