WHAT IT IS: A gifted solo artist with a band brain, Cale Dodds masterfully plays off the musicians who surround him and creates a salon-style performance space where the audience is a welcome extension of the band. That collaborative style carries over to his songwriting. Dodds has a tremendous ability to turn a phrase and explore nuances that are easily overlooked. Touted by Rolling Stone as one of their “New Country Artists You Need to Know” for his “smooth pop-country crooning over arena ready arrangements distinguished by clever lyricism,” the Columbus, Ga., native mines his own experiences in songs. Dodds will give fans a taste of new music with “What We Gonna Do About It” on 10/5, with another tune due later this month. Meanwhile, he remains in the studio, continuing work on his forthcoming debut album.
