The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights" (
XO/
Republic) has reached an astonishing four billion streams on
Spotify, making it the first song in the DSP's history to achieve such a milestone. The artist born
Abel Tesfaye also broke his own record for most monthly listeners in Spotify history with 113 million, surpassing the 100 million threshold he reached in February 2023.
The
SALXCO-managed artist issued a quote in which he said he was "humbled" by the success of "Blinding Lights," which had already zoomed by
Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" last year to become the most-streamed song on Spotify. "I'm so thankful that this song makes people feel a way that they keep going back to listen," he added. Going back? It seems they never left.
"Blinding Lights" was the second single from The Weeknd's 2020 XO/Republic album,
After Hours. It was co-written by Tesfaye with Swedish hitmakers
Max Martin and
Oscar Holter.
Having wrapped his extensive
After Hours Til Dawn worldwide stadium tour last October, the artist is said to be working on one final album under The Weeknd moniker, though no details have emerged about the project. If he wants to choose a new artist handle based on a week
day, we'd be happy to sit in on a brainstorming session.
